What does the first appointment with a new stylist sound like to you? Awkward, scary, exciting? We have all been there.
In my years behind the chair no one has ever said during their first appointment, "I'm so excited to be putting my trust in a complete stranger wielding scissors to my head!" Let's be honest, trying a new hair stylist can be a challenge. (Dare I say, like dating?)
That said, the key to a great first appointment with a new hairstylist is in the CONSULTATION. Any good stylist will agree, the consultation is key to a successful first appointment. How do you know if your first appointment is going well? Communication and connection.
Do you feel seen and heard? A good stylist will ask questions, listen to your answers and clarify what you mean before touching your hair with scissors or chemicals.
QUESTIONS --Doing hair like a detective
Asking directed questions to figure out a clients needs is going to be different for every guest. I find these categories to be the most helpful:
-Desired Result
-Hair History
-Lifestyle
-Budget
HONESTY
We want to give our clients everything they ask for, but a the best hair stylists know when to say, "No."
For example, if a request is too damaging to the hair, unflattering or would require more maintenance than the client can realistically keep up with. A stylist who cares about the long term result of the hair and client relationship will have a vested interest in your hair's health and your happiness--and be able to have those conversations if they come up, and suggest better options for you.
Consultations are complimentary and only take 5-15 min. Get all of your hair questions answered by booking your first appointment today!
